American singer-songwriter Alexander Glantz, popularly known as Alexander 23, released his new single, “Brown Eyed Baby,” on June 7.
The musician previously collaborated with Lauv and Jeremy Zucker for the track “Cozy” earlier this year. Alexander 23 has also released several solo hits, including “IDK You Yet,” “Cry Over Boys,” “Nothing’s The Same,” “Hate Me If It Helps,” and “Dirty AF1s.” He received producing and songwriting credits for his collaborations with notable artists, earning a Grammy nomination for his work on Olivia Rodrigo’s album “Sour.”
During his visit to the Philippines, the artist shared in an interview with Music Geek the warm support he received from his fans during his “American Boy in Asia Tour.” Alexander 23 expressed that one of his favorite perks as a musician is traveling the world, specifically mentioning his pleasant stay in Cebu the previous year. He gratefully acknowledged that music allows him to tour the world.
Discussing his musical aspirations, the artist revealed that he writes about typical day-to-day experiences, stating, “My main goal as a songwriter is to say something about what we have all experienced in a way that we have never heard it said before.”
Alexander 23 is in the process of understanding what characteristics a musician requires to enjoy their craft. “I used to believe that it needs to feel difficult sometimes… But in more recent years, if it doesn’t feel enjoyable, easy, and cathartic, then it’s not right,” he said. “I’m just taking the path of the least resistance recently and trying to enjoy the journey a bit more… I’m still trying to figure it out myself.”
Recently, Alexander 23 released a mellow pop track about unrequited love titled “Brown Eyed Baby.” The artist shared his excitement and confidence about releasing it, noting that he composed the song while away from his hometown, taking advantage of the opportunity to unwind and work in a different setting.
He discussed the longevity of a composition, from creating it in the studio to performing it on stage. “After making a song in the studio, that is day one. But you have years of performing it, hopefully around the world, singing it, and people bringing it up to you.”
Alexander 23 found inspiration while collaborating with artists who are self-assured in their visions. Reflecting on the collaborative track “Cozy,” he mentioned that they have been friends for years, adding, “We all kind of want it, but without too high of expectations, it was just to have fun.”
Ultimately, the singer-songwriter expressed his passion for music, stating, “Listen to it, make it, play it, you know? Experience it.”
He added, “It’s like emotional oxygen. We all require it to keep going.”
Alexander 23 also expressed his delight in visiting the Philippines, adding, “Honestly, I love it here so much. I’m so grateful for my Filipino fans, some of the kindest, most welcoming, and warm people I have ever met.”
“After this tour is over, I’m going to be spending plenty of time making music for me — I’m excited about it,” the musician said, adding that fans can anticipate brand new music from him soon. He also revealed that he hasn’t fully explored his musicality and is eager to delve deeper.
Here is the rest of the interview with Alexander 23’s:
Music Geek: Have you considered producing a song in a different language?
Alexander 23: I would love to. I’m hoping that next time I come to Asia specifically, I’ll have more time to work with more local artists, dive in a little deeper, and explore in general.
Can you name some Asian artists you wish to collaborate with in the future?
There are so many talented ones. The first that comes to mind is TXT. It’s because I’m obsessed with some of their songs currently.
What’s the most meaningful piece you’ve released?
“The Hardest Part.” It is about a friend of mine’s passing away. It was not a fun song to write or an enjoyable song to perform. But something that has blown me away about this most recent Asia tour is how much people out here connect to that song.
