A Chinese man believed to be a member of a kidnapping group died in Pampanga after allegedly shooting himself during arrest, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Tuesday.
The BI said its fugitive search unit (FSU) conducted a raid in a condominium building in Angeles City to arrest the alleged overstaying foreigner and his companions.
But instead of turning themselves in, the foreigners allegedly attempted to flee, causing a chase between them and the authorities.
Apprehended in the operation are suspects Feng Zhengheng, 29; Chou Yibo, 33; and Wang Yan, 25. However, 35-year-old Wu Fu Wen refused to surrender and fatally shot himself.
According to BI Commissioner Normal Tansingco, an investigation showed the Chinese citizens were allegedly the prime suspects in the murder of nine foreigners whose bodies were dumped in different areas of Pampanga several months ago.
Six of the victims were Chinese, while the three others were from Vietnam, Malaysia, and Japan.
The arrested foreigners are in the BI detention facility, where they will stay until their criminal cases are resolved. They will also be facing deportation charges.
The suspects have been living in the Philippines since 2019 and did not bother to apply for an extension of their stay in the country, the immigration bureau said. —Sundy Locus/VBL, GMA Integrated News
