A raft of Australian institutions – including major banks, media outlets and airlines – have reported being hit by a mass IT outage.
Flights have been grounded at Sydney airport, supermarkets are experiencing checkout chaos, and broadcast networks have been left scrambling on air as autocue, graphics and computers failed.
Hours before Australia was severely affected, a handful of airlines in the US also reported having to delay or cancel flights due to IT issues.
The cause of the outage is unclear, but many of those affected have linked it to Microsoft PC operating systems.
At Sydney’s Airport, information disappeared from departure boards. In an announcement to passengers in the domestic terminal, budget carrier Jetstar said that an “issue with Microsoft” meant it was unable to check in passengers, or to board its flights.
Virgin Australia has also told its travellers there was a “complete ground stop” of flights.
Social media users have reported queues at stores like Woolworths, with payment systems downed.
Australian outage website Downdetector shows issues being reported by the National Australia Bank, telecom firm Telstra, Google and more.
An official Microsoft 365 service update posted to X earlier in the day said ” we’re investigating an issue impacting users ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services”.
In a statement, Australia’s cybersecurity watchdog said there is no information to suggest it is a cybersecurity incident.
“Our current information is this outage relates to a technical issue with a third-party software platform employed by affected companies,” they said in a statement.
