A young boy from Tayabas City, Quezon, who has a large birthmark on his body underwent a medical consultation with a dermatologist with the help of GMA Kapuso Foundation.

According to “24 Oras,” Wednesday, the almost two-year-old boy, Jay, was also suffering from many moles on his body that would persistently itch and swell. Per his mother, Theresa Anis, the birthmarks multiplied as the boy grew older, but she and her husband could not afford to get medical treatment for their son.

Jay was able to be examined by dermatologist Dr. Grace Beltran, who identified the massive birthmark or mole on his body as “garment nevi.”

“Ang tawag dito garment nevi or giant bathing trunk nevus tapos meron din siyang satellite moles. Dapat siyang matingnan ng isang neurologist kasi ang ganitong mga klaseng problema sa balat can be related to some neurological problem, for example, meningocele or spina bifida sa spine. It can be genetic or it can be sporadic, meaning to say bigla lang lalabas di mo alam kung kailan,” said Beltran.

Beltran also said that the moles can develop into cancer if exposed to sunlight, infrared light, or visible light.

Aside from the medical consultation, Jay’s family also received medicine for itch-relief, vitamins, hygiene kits, and grocery packs from the foundation. According to “24 Oras,” Jay still needs to undergo a spinal X-ray and an ultrasound before he can be examined by a neurologist.
