‘Carina’ intensifies as Signal No. 2 remains over Batanes

MANILA, Philippines — Typhoon “Carina” continues to intensify while moving northward as the province of Batanes in extreme Northern Luzon remains under Signal No. 2, the state-run weather agency said on Tuesday.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 5p.m. bulletin that the typhoon is moving at 20 kilometers per hour (kph) as its center was last spotted some 325 kms east-northeast of Basco, Batanes.

It has maximum sustained winds of 150kph near the center and gustiness of up to 185kph.

Pagasa said Signal No. 1 is still up over Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, the eastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon, Dinapigue, Tumauini, Ilagan City, San Mariano, Cabagan, San Pablo and Santa Maria), the northern portion of Apayao (Calanasan, Luna, Pudtol, Flora, Santa Marcela and Kabugao) and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud Bangui, Adams, Dumalneg, Burgos, Vintar, Pasuguin, Bacarra and Carasi) also in Luzon.

Until Wednesday afternoon, the state weather bureau said about 100 to 200 millimeter amount of rainfall is expected over Northern Luzon areas particularly Batanes, Cagayan and Ilocos Sur until Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon locally known as “habagat” is being enhanced by the typhoon as it brings moderate to intense rainfall over many areas in the western portion of Luzon, including Metro Manila, until Thursday.

Likely to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility either Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, Carina would remain far from the landmass, Pagasa said.
