MANILA, Philippines — “Carina” has intensified into a super typhoon and is forecast to make landfall over northern Taiwan as it leaves the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said on Wednesday.

Packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph, the super typhoon is moving northwestward at the speed of 20 kph, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 5 p.m. bulletin.

The center of the eye of Carina was estimated at 380 kms north of Itbayat, Batanes, the agency said.

Batanes remains under Signal No. 2 while Babuyan Islands, the northern portion of mainland Cagayan (Claveria, Santa Praxedes, Sanchez-Mira, Pamplona, Abulug, Ballesteros, Aparri, Camalaniugan, Buguey, Santa Teresita, Santa Ana and Gonzaga), and the northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Burgos, Bangui, Pagudpud, Dumalneg and Adams) in Luzon remain under Signal No. 1., the latest advisory said.

Pagasa said the super typhoon would likely make landfall over the northern portion of Taiwan on Wednesday evening.

Its landfall over northern Taiwan will trigger a weakening trend for the rest of the forecast period, the state-run weather agency added.
