A total of 979 of schools have rescheduled their school openings on a later date, according to the latest tally issued by the Department of Education (DepEd).

In its latest media bulletin released Sunday afternoon, the figures dropped from 1,063 to 979 as of 2:30 p.m.

Central Luzon posted the highest number of affected schools with 452, followed by Ilocos Region (231), National Capital Region (225), Calabarzon (67), and Soccsksargen (4).

Numbers for NCR and Soccsksargen were unchanged from the previously-issued bulletins. Public schools in Cotabato and Metro Manila cities such as Malabon, Pasig, Marikina and Valenzuela will reopen on August 5.

The Teachers Dignity Coalition (TDC) earlier called on local government units (LGUs) in areas affected by the recent Super Typhoon ‘Carina’ and habagat rains to reschedule class openings to a later date.

This is to give all education stakeholders time to recover from the calamity and adequately prepare for the upcoming school year 2024-2025.

Earlier, Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara encouraged other schools unaffected by the storms to push through with the opening of classes on Monday, July 29, to avoid further learning loss among Filipino students.
