THE EDSA Busway is undergoing a makeover for security and accessibility, especially for the elderly and persons with disabilities (PWDs), the Department of Transportation (DoTr) said Monday.
Busway stations in Monumento, Bagong Barrio, Balintawak, Philam and Guadalupe are being fitted with footbridges, elevators and CCTV cameras, the DoTr said.
A total of 166 CCTV cameras are expected to boost operational capability and monitor busway regulation violations.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said the DoTr would make improvements to cover the entire 18 busway stations.
These improvements are for the safety and ease of passengers. This is the answer to concerns over accessibility and comfort in commuting, especially for seniors and PWDs, Bautista said during the opening of the Philam Station.
“We will ask for additional budget for this [additional man lifts, smart traffic surveillance system],” he added.

Improvements include the construction of new stations at Philam and Kamuning in Quezon City; construction of pedestrian footbridges in Balintawak, Santolan and Guadalupe stations; and rehabilitation of existing footbridges in Monumento, Bagong Barrio and Philam stations.
Facility improvements also include the construction of PWD ramps, catch basins and storm drain pipes, as well as the provision of pressurized washers for concrete barriers.
Bautista said the new facilities would complement the EDSA Greenways Project.
“Karugtong ito ng (This is connected to the) EDSA Greenways Project and will be accessible to EDSA Busway,” he said.
The EDSA Greenways Project aims to improve the pedestrian environment by building elevated walkways along the busiest thoroughfare in Metro Manila, specifically in Balintawak and Cubao in Quezon City, Guadalupe in Makati City, and Taft Avenue in Pasay City.
Once completed, the EDSA Greenways Project will connect pedestrians and commuters to mass transit stations to help promote the use of public transport.
