Senate President Francis Escudero said the allegations of a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official receiving bribes from South Korean firm Miru Systems through offshore accounts came from a member of the House of Representatives.
Due to this, he said the matter will most likely be looked into by the House unless a member of the Senate files a resolution for an inquiry on the issue.
“We have to note though that simultaneous hearings on the same issue are sometimes tricky and complicated,” Escudero said.
He added that it sometimes results in different outcomes especially in this case that Comelec members are impeachable officials.
Escudero likewise warned that the Senate must avoid pre-judging (or the appearance thereof of) any putative case that may reach them in the future. In case of an impeachment case, the senators will sit as judges.
Comelec Chairman George Garcia on Tuesday denied rumors linking him to alleged offshore accounts and asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate the claims.
Rep. Rodante Marcoleta of party-list SAGIP earlier claimed that 49 offshore bank accounts allegedly “traceable” to a Comelec official received deposits around $2.1 million or more than P120 million from banks in South Korea.
