MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Bong Go visited the Philippine General Hospital (PGH)’s Cancer Institute on July 25 to extend support to patients and frontliners affected by Typhoon Carina.
Go and his Malasakit Team distributed food packs, shirts, basketballs and volleyballs to the patients during their visit. The hospital staff received fruits and balls as well.
Go also provided rice porridge or “goto” to PGH’s patients and frontliners. The senator’s staff conducted the feeding program in areas near Malasakit Centers and for those who suffered in Carina’s aftermath.
“This is a small thing compared to what you went through. This is nourishing and will help you. What is important is for you to heal from your ailments,” he said.
Go thanked PGH director Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, dietary division in-charge Emmie Lavilla, Cancer Institute director Dr. Rodney Dofitas, nursing services deputy director Cecille Punzalan and Malasakit Center head Daisy Manlangit.
Go is the principal author and sponsor of Republic Act 11463, or the Malasakit Centers Act of 2019, which institutionalized the Malasakit Centers program. This one-stop shop aims to support underprivileged patients in reducing their hospital costs.
According to Department of Health, there are 166 Malasakit Centers nationwide, including the one in PGH. These centers have helped about 10 million Filipinos.
