Senator Risa Hontiveros, lead proponent of the sexual orientation, gender identity/expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill, renewed her campaign for the enactment of this measure with a rainbow pin she proudly wore during President Marcos’ State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 22.

“I am one with the LGBTIQ+ community and their families in calling for the passage of the SOGIE Equality Bill,” Hontiveros said. “Equality and non-discrimination should be part of the national agenda.”

The senator highlighted the growing coalition of legislators and celebrities, who also displayed rainbow pins on their clothes at the annual political event, indicating their support to the proposed legislation.

Hontiveros wore a simple Filipiniana designed by Joel Acebuche with the rainbow brooch pinned on it. Prominent figures such as comedian John Lapus and weatherman Ariel Rojas also made their support known on social media, sharing photos of themselves wearing the rainbow pin.

“Discrimination is an obstacle in development,” according to the senator, noting that every Filipino, regardless of gender, should have the opportunity to contribute freely to the nation’s progress.

President Marcos did not mention the SOGIE Equality Bill in his SONA. The proposed legislation is still under deliberation in the 19th Congress. Despite repeated efforts by supporters like Hontiveros, the bill has faced numerous delays and opposition from various groups.

The SOGIE Equality Bill seeks to protect individuals from discrimination based on their sexual orientation and gender identity. It aims to provide equal rights and opportunities to all citizens, regardless of their gender or sexual preference.

While it has garnered significant support from various sectors, including legislators, celebrities, and human rights advocates, it continues to encounter resistance from conservative and religious groups.

The bill’s progress is closely watched by its advocates, who remain hopeful for its eventual passage. They continue to push for its inclusion in the national agenda, emphasizing its importance in promoting equality and non-discrimination in the country.
