(UPDATES) THE House of Representatives has formally ordered the arrest and detention of Michael Yang, former economic adviser of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
House Secretary General Reginald Velasco signed the Committee on Dangerous Drugs’ contempt order.
The committee, which ordered Yang’s 30-day detention at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City, cited him for contempt after he failed to show up at panel hearings despite several invitations for him to testify as a resource person.
However, Rep. Robert Ace Barbers said Yang has left the Philippines.
“We were informed na ang subject ng arrest order ay wala na ho rito (We were informed that the subject of the arrest order is no longer in the country),” Barbers, chairman of the committee, said in a press conference on Wednesday.
Barbers said that “we will have to provide… information to the [Bureau of Immigration and the Department of Foreign Affairs] so that the DFA can likewise alarm other countries about the arrest order.”
Retired general and House Sergeant-at-Arms Napoleon Taas and his team served the arrest order at a law office.
The committee was conducting an investigation that stemmed from the P3.6 billion worth of shabu seized last year in a warehouse in Pampanga.
