MANILA, Philippines — The upper portion of the Kamuning flyover will be reopened in August after undergoing major repairs, an official of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said yesterday.

In an interview with dzBB, DPWH-National Capital Region (NCR) regional director Loreta Malaluan said the major repairs conducted on the Kamuning flyover are ahead of schedule.

“We said previously that the upper portion, we will be able to finish it in October. But we are expecting that before the end of August, it will be finished and we will be able to open it for use of vehicles,” Malaluan said.

She said the retrofitting at the lower portion of the flyover is expected to be completed by yearend.

“We have already started the lower portion. We are expecting that before the end of the year, we will be able to finish because we are putting up an SP Chain in preparation for the earthquake or the so-called Big One,” she said.

Malaluan said that after the opening of the Kamuning flyover, the DPWH will attend to the repair of the Magallanes flyover.

“We are going to replace the expansion joints of the Magallanes flyover,” she said.

Malaluan said the replacement of the expansion joints is only a minor repair.

“Once we start it in August, the contract says it will be finished by March 2025. But we are expecting that it will be completed before the end of the year,” Malaluan said.

Meanwhile, she clarified that the rehabilitation of the Guadalupe bridge is a project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency and not the DPWH-NCR.

“So the one in charge there is the DPWH unified project office,” Malaluan said.

“What was announced was that it would start before the end of the year. But it will not be totally closed to motorists because a detour or parallel bridge will be constructed to compensate for the possible disturbance that the repair will create during the rehabilitation, and to accommodate the motorists that will be affected by this,” she said.

The DPWH official also assured the public that the contractor of the repairs on flyovers and bridges in Metro Manila is a credible construction company.

“While its name is a chemical company, the contractor is an expert in making bridges, especially in retrofitting and civil works construction. They have contracted many projects in the DPWH already,” Malaluan said.
