President Marcos joined world leaders Sunday in wishing for the swift recovery of former US President Donald Trump, who survived a failed assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“It is with great relief that we receive the news that former President Donald Trump is fine and well after the attempt to assassinate him,” Mr. Marcos said on his official X account (formerly Twitter) Sunday.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family,” the Philippine Commander-in-Chief added, noting that the Philippines condemns all forms of political violence.
“Together with all democracy loving peoples around the world, we condemn all forms of political violence. The voice of the people must always remain supreme,” he said.
Trump was rushed off stage after he was shot by an assailant on Saturday (Sunday morning) in Manila in the thick of the election season in the United States. The former US President was trying to win the White House back from his Democrat rival and incumbent President Joe Biden.
President Biden, who is set to face Trump in November’s deeply polarized election, said the incident was “sick” and added that there was “no place in America for this kind of violence.”
Biden later spoke to Trump, the White House said, in their first contact since a debate just over two weeks ago. With Agence France Presse
