MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila has been placed under a state of calamity, Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos said on Wednesday because of the rains and floods brought in by a southwest monsoon enhanced by Typhoon “Carina.”
Abalos made the announcement while meeting with Metro Manila mayors. He also recommended this to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The request was first made by San Juan Mayor and Metro Manila Council President Francis Zamora, who was with Abalos during the meeting, and was later seconded by Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano.
It was also supported by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Don Artes.
“Because of what is happening, especially in Metro Manila, our recommendation here is that we might declare a state of calamity in Metro Manila,” he said in Filipino.
The MMDA announced that San Juan, Mandaluyong and Manila suspended classes in all levels in public and private schools.
