The National Bureau of Investigation-Davao (NBI-11) has opened an investigation into the more than 1,200 birth certificates issued to Chinese nationals in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur from 2016 to 2019.
NBI-11 Director, Atty. Arcelito Albao, said they are still checking how many of the 1,200 are questionable or falsified.
Recently, NBI-11 discovered around 200 falsified birth certificates issued to Chinese nationals in the town following the arrest of a 21-year-old Chinese national who submitted a falsified birth certificate when he applied for a Philippine passport in Davao City.
“Wala pa kaming exact numbers kung ilan ang may criminal records kasi nga iba ang nakapangalan sa birth certificate iba naman ang pangalan ng mga nag mamay ari nito na nga Chinese nationals,” Albao said.
NBI-11 also found out that getting a fake birth certificate in Davao del Sur allegedly can cost someone as much as P500,000.
Authorities are looking into the possibility that there is a syndicate behind this illegal activity.
“Meron tayong nakausap dito sa Davao na isang witness dito nasa P500,000 naman… mas mahal siguro, iba ang sitwasyon, mas mayaman siguro ito, and baka mas mabilis yung pag process,” Albao added.
NBI-11 is worried as this is a big threat to national security.
“Ang problema natin dito is pagnakakuha ng birth certificate, they consider themselves as Filipino after which they can open bank accounts anywhere sa Pilipinas… baka one of these days, hindi natin alam mga kapitbahay natin puro na mga Chinese nationals wala na tayong lote o property pag-aari na ng ibang national,” Albao said.
NBI-11 reminded the public, especially developers and those who are selling properties, to check documents thoroughly and to ascertain if they are transacting with a Filipino. —GMA Regional TV
