MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area over the West Philippine Sea west of Batangas has developed into a tropical depression and will be called “Butchoy,” the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in an advisory late Friday.

Butchoy, however, is “unlikely to directly affect the country” but the southwest monsoon or “habagat” it enhances “may still bring moderate to heavy rains over the western portion of Luzon over the next three days, according to an advisory issued at 11 p.m. of July 19.
