THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced the launch of Project for Capacity Development for Monitoring and Information Dissemination of Earthquake, Tsunami and Volcano, a collaborative endeavor with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The initiative was inaugurated on Tuesday, in time with the commemoration of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Luzon on July 16, 1990.
Present during the signing rites at Phivolcs auditorium in Quezon City were Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol and JICA chief representative Takema Sakamoto.
“Overall, the project will contribute to the continuous enhancement of Phivolcs’ ability to provide timely and accurate information for disaster preparedness and response,” Solidum said.
“We deem this as an invaluable knowledge-sharing experience, as it empowers the Phivolcs to implement the best practices from Japan and tailor these to our specific needs,” Bacolcol added.
