The Philippines and Singapore signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on defense cooperation on Wednesday as the two countries celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations.
The development was announced by Singapore’s defense ministry.
Philippines Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and Singapore Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng He signed the memorandum, which will serve as a framework to guide existing interactions and promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as military education and anti-terrorism, to foster closer people-to-people links.
The MOU builds on the existing arrangement concerning the Conduct of Education, Training Assistance and Support Activities on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.
Apart from the signing of the partnership, both countries vow to maintain friendly relations and continue cooperation at the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus fora during the meeting.
Senior Philippine defense officials, as well as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines General Romeo Brawner and Flag Officer-in-Command of the Philippine Navy Vice Admiral Toribio Adaci Jr. joined Teodoro in Singapore. —Sundy Locus/VBL, GMA Integrated News
