MANILA, Philippines — Three-time congressman and incumbent Quezon City Councilor Alfred Vargas has supported the decision of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) to impose a one-month amortization moratorium for victims of Typhoon Carina.

“The home is the foundation of the Filipino family. To help our families recover from disasters, they need to feel secure at their homes,” he said.

“The DHSUD’s quick and decisive action under Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar will bring great relief to our fellow Filipinos. It shows the compassion of our government to the victims of this calamity,” Vargas added.

The DHSUD recently instructed its key shelter agencies Pag-IBIG, National Housing Authority and Social Housing Finance Corp. to impose a one-month moratorium on the amortization of their covered beneficiaries.

Vargas also lauded the hands-on approach of President Marcos.

“The President was quick in responding to the disaster and made sure to be personally there to help. Under his leadership, we quickly mitigated the impact of this disaster,” he said.

Vargas previously headed the House social services committee.

“I am aware that infrastructure resiliency plays a key role in our whole-of-government response to disasters, especially those brought about by climate change,” he said.

“Typhoon Carina showed us that living a life with dignity requires the strong foundation of a home. Our resilience as a people is directly affected by the resiliency of our homes,” Vargas added.
