Hit drama series Shogun, which transported viewers to early 17th-century Japan, topped television’s Emmy nominations on Wednesday, earning 25 nods. The Bear, on the other hand, broke the comedy record for most nominations in a single year, with 23, ahead of Only Murders in the Building which had 21.

Set in a chaotic Chicago restaurant, the series delves into the lives of abrasive chefs and their tumultuous relationships, blending Michelin star-level dishes with poignant narratives. Despite its serious themes of grief and addiction, The Bear impressed voters and stands out alongside competitors like Hacks and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

In the limited or anthology series section, True Detective: Night Country led with 19 nominations, transporting viewers to Alaska with a gripping storyline anchored by Jodie Foster’s compelling performance. The nominations underscored the series’ dark crime narrative, competing against acclaimed titles such as Fargo and Lessons in Chemistry.

The live-streamed nomination ceremony from Los Angeles highlighted a diverse array of nominees, setting the stage for final-round voting in mid-August ahead of the Sept. 15 awards ceremony. With anticipation building for the 76th Emmy Awards, which will honor television series broadcast between June 2023 and May 2024, the industry awaits to see which shows will take home the prestigious awards this year.
