SEOUL–South Korea’s exports rose in double digits in the first 20 days of this month due to solid demand for locally-made semiconductors, customs office data showed on Monday.

Outbound shipment soared 18.8 percent over the year to $37.17 billion in the July 1-20 period, according to the Korea Customs Service.

The daily average export went up 11.6 percent in the 20-day period. The monthly exports kept an upward trend for the ninth consecutive month through May.

Import gained 14.2 percent to 37.22 billion dollars in the July 20-day period, sending the trade deficit to $50 million.

Semiconductor export spiked 57.5 percent to $6.78 billion and shipment for oil products, automotive components, computers and home appliances advanced in double figures.

Automotive shipments added 1.8 percent to $3.49 billion, but those for mobile devices and precision machinery slipped in single digits.

Import for crude oil, chips, natural gas, oil products, precision machinery and cars recorded a double-digit increase in the 20-day period.
