In his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, President Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea (WPS), emphasizing that our maritime claims in these regional waters are grounded within our legal and constitutional rights.
“The West Philippine Sea is not a figment of our imagination. It is ours. And it will remain ours as long as the spirit of our beloved Philippines burns bright,” Mr. Marcos declared, receiving enthusiastic applause and cheers from the audience.
The President renewed his government’s commitment to assert the Philippines territorial rights through constant diplomatic efforts amid the recurring challenges posed by the People’s Republic of China, which claims the entire WPS or South China Sea.
“Proper diplomatic channels and mechanisms under the rules-based international order remain the only acceptable means of settling disputes. Peace and community-building will always be our clarion call,” he said.
Mr. Marcos maintained this stance consistent with the government’s de-escalation policy “without compromising our position and our principles,” and in preparation for the Philippines’ chairmanship and hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in 2026.
He stressed the importance of using proper diplomatic channels and mechanisms under a rules-based international order to resolve disputes. He also praised the efforts of neighboring countries in striving for stability and cooperation.
The President also underscored the importance of strengthening the country’s defense posture, both through self-reliance and partnerships with like-minded states. “We are now more conscious as a people and strategic in heightening our aerial and maritime domain awareness,” he noted.
“The Philippines cannot yield. The Philippines cannot waver,” Mr. Marcos reiterated, ensuring the fight for our sovereign rights in the WPS will be embedded in the Filipinos’ national consciousness and continue for generations.
Laws on Maritime Zones and Archipelagic Sea Lanes are being enacted to solidify this commitment, he reminded, stating “this duty will firmly take root in the hearts and minds of our people.” The President also acknowledged the efforts of the coast guard and military to achieve this end.
“Receive the heartfelt gratitude of the entire nation for your vigilance and sacrifice,” President Marcos said, addressing the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine Coast Guard and the fisherfolk at the forefront of the nation’s battle for the WPS.
