The local government of Makati announced on Tuesday that the city has not declared a state of calamity.
Mayor Abigail Binay stated that the recent Super Typhoon Carina and habagat did not meet the criteria for such a declaration as it did not have a significant impact on the residents, businesses, and livelihood in the city.
She said there are no more evacuees in all of the evacuation centers, and the number of affected residents who needed emergency assistance was below the minimum required for a state of calamity declaration.
There were also zero casualties and the Makati Central Business District while other commercial areas in the city are now back to normal.
Mayor Binay also highlighted that essential services and basic local government facilities are fully operational.
She emphasized that the city’s personnel and barangay officials worked together to clear debris and clean up the streets and waterways to ensure the safety of the public.
Mayor Binay also expressed readiness to support and assist the hard-hit cities in Metro Manila and neighboring provinces in their recovery and rebuilding efforts.
The Metro Manila Council (MMC) earlier approved the declaration of a state of calamity, allowing local governments in the National Capital Region to access additional funds for calamity response and impose a price freeze on basic goods.
The proposal for the declaration came from Department of the Interior and Local Government secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr., highlighting the importance of taking decisive action to assist those affected.
Quezon City has been heavily affected by the floods from Typhoon Carina, with 22,000 evacuees being supported in 154 evacuation centers. Due to the full capacity of existing evacuation centers, churches and covered courts have also been utilized to accommodate evacuees.
