A TOTAL of 1,246 students from Grades 3 to 6, who have been assessed to be either nonreaders or frustrated readers, will undergo 10-day sessions at the Reading Camp set for July 10 in Valenzuela City.
Mayor Weslie Gatchalian told The Manila Times (TMT) via Viber on Tuesday that 64 teachers, also known as reading coordinators, have undergone a comprehensive teaching training.
“They would be assigned as the main facilitators for the upcoming Reading Camp, which is being spearheaded by the Synergeia Foundation led by Dr. Milwida Guevara and the Office of Vice Mayor Lorie Natividad-Borja,” Gatchalian said.
Each reading coordinator was provided with modular kits detailing the correct teaching approach for students who experience challenges in reading and pronunciation — particularly those who fall under “frustrated readers” and “nonreaders” category.
Guevara personally trained the teachers on specific techniques such as phonemes or correct pronunciation of letters and syllables, as well as necessary methods to help their students to read words accurately.
She also emphasized the importance of being creative in teaching, by allowing their students to learn through activating their five senses, playing fun games and moving the body, the mayor said.
Also, 128 teacher’s aides, mainly student volunteers from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela, had undergone training to prepare them for the Reading Camp.
Two teacher’s aides would be assigned for each teacher in implementing the program, the city government said.
Natividad-Borja, Education 360 action officer, extended her support to dedicated teachers of the Reading Camp.
The city’s Public Information Office said the Reading Camp is a branch of the Education 360 Degrees Investment Program that provides assistive learning methods to frustrated readers and nonreaders of Grades 3, 4, 5 and 6.
This program will help students to understand the fundamentals and improve their skills in reading and pronunciation, Public Information Officer Mara Salazar-Ignacio told TMT.
“This [program] is part of our unceasing campaign to transform Valenzuela into a reading and learning city,” Mayor Gatchalian said.
