THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Human Trafficking Division arrested a woman Tuesday for selling a baby through Facebook.

Christina Paule of Muntinlupa City will be charged for child trafficking, the NBI said.

NBI chief Jaime Santiago said after they received information that Paule was trying to sell the baby for P25,000 through Facebook, an NBI agent posed as a buyer.

“The agent engaged in conversations with the perpetrator, who introduced herself as a midwife and offered to sell a 6-day-old baby. They agreed to meet for the transaction,” the Department of Justice said.

“At the agreed meeting place, the perpetrator introduced herself and showed the baby in exchange for money. Upon confirming her intent to sell the newborn baby, the agent signaled for the arrest,” they added.

The baby has been turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development-National Capital Region.

“The successful operation underscores the ongoing efforts of the government to combat human trafficking and protect the most vulnerable members of the society,” Santiago said.

In 2019, the NBI also uncovered a syndicate that sold babies using Facebook. At the time, agents rescued a week-old baby sold for P40,000 to a couple in Las Piñas City.
