Filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone is making her international debut with the world premiere of her film Sunshine, starring Maris Racal, at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Jadaone shared the news on social media, drawing various congratulatory messages from fellow filmmakers and actors who have worked closely with her.

Revolving around the story of a young gymnast who finds out about her pregnancy right before trying out for the national team, Sunshine was produced by film studios ANIMA and Project 8 Projects. It serves as Jadaone’s attempt to spark conversations about teenage pregnancy in the country, which has long been considered taboo.

Sunshine will be part of the official selection of TIFF’s Centrepiece Program, joining other films from around the world that depict compelling stories with global perspectives on various prevalent social issues.

Founded in 1976, TIFF is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, having premiered numerous Oscar-winning films throughout its run. TIFF 2024 marks the 49th edition of the film festival and will run from Sept. 5 to 15.
