QUEZON City 1st District Rep. Juan Carlos Atayde on Thursday urged the national government to help fund the city’s proposed flood control program, noting the lethal threat of floods on residents during inclement weather.
Heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon prompted the government to suspend work and classes in many areas of the National Capital Region on Wednesday.
“We cannot simply accept this. This should not go on forever. We need to take action on this. My constituents, and the residents of Quezon City, are resilient people. But it is no longer justifiable that we had to endure this hardship every year. That’s why we need to resolve this problem.” Atayde said in a statement.

He added that experts from the University of the Philippines have conducted a comprehensive study resulting in an actionable flood control plan for Quezon City.
This includes construction of a detention basin under Araneta Avenue and flood interceptors in N. S. Amoranto village, from Araneta Ave. to San Francisco River, dubbed the “Talayan Flood Interceptor Project.”
The project, which aims to accommodate 10,000 cubic meters of flood water from Talayan Village, involves upgrading of drainage pipes in the area to raise their capacity to 12,000 cubic meters.
The length of the flood interceptors will be 2.2 kilometers long.
What the city needs, Atayde said, is support from the national government as the estimated cost of the project is P4 to P24 billion.
“This is not just an issue of convenience, this is an issue of productivity as well. We cannot allow rains to continually disrupt classes, businesses, and even government services. If there are solutions within reach, we should implement them immediately.” he added.
