President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. declared August 13, 2024 to August 12, 2025 the centennial year for Ilocano master weaver and national living treasure Magdalena Gamayo.
Gamayo, known for her intricate designs, her patterns of Ilocano Abel, and preserving the traditional weaving industry, will celebrate her 100th birthday on August 13.
“For this purpose, the NCCA (National Commission for Culture and the Arts) is hereby directed to lead, coordinate, and supervise the observance of the Centennial Year of Manlilikha ng Bayan Magdalena Gamayo, and identify programs, activities, and projects for the celebration thereof,” according to the Proclamation No. 664.
The proclamation also calls on various government agencies, state universities and colleges, and the private sector “to render the necessary support and assistance to the NCCA, and to actively participate in the observance.”
Gamayo was conferred with the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan award in 2012.
According to the National Museum, the work of a “Manlilikha ng Bayan” “is presumed to be an Important Cultural Property, second to National Cultural Treasure, the highest category of cultural property through Republic Act No. 10066, also known as the National Heritage Act of 2009.” — DVM, GMA Integrated News
