THE House of Representatives was working on a Magna Carta for barangay (village) workers so they could have the same benefits as regular employees, said Speaker Martin Romualdez.

“In this proposal, we aim to create a comprehensive benefits and support scheme for our village officials,” Romualdez said during the Liga ng mga Barangay convention at the World Trade Center in Pasay City on Saturday.

Entitlement to social security benefits and a fixed term of six years were among the items included in the planned Magna Carta for Barangay Workers, Romualdez added.

The fixed term of six years, he said, would insulate barangay workers from electoral concerns, allowing them to focus on their responsibilities to their constituents.

“I hope that you will become our partners in creating these laws. I urge you to pass position papers so that your proposals will be included in these bills,” Romualdez said.

“The Liga ng mga Barangay is an important organization in our country because of the role it plays in our community,” he added.
