MANILA, Philippines — Customs intelligence operatives seized more than P38 million worth of dried marijuana shipped into the country over the weekend from Thailand.
In a report to Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) Director Verne Enciso said the contraband was declared as plastic tableware, kitchenware, blankets, men’s shoes, and others.
But during physical examination of the shipment, Bureau of Customs (BoC) agents found dried marijuana leaves estimated at P38.8 million, consigned to Philippians 4:19 Export and Import General Merchandize.
Enciso identified the shipment sender as Wilma Bulahagui, with Erickson Bulahagui as the receiver.
“Our multifaceted approach allows us to not only keep up with new smuggling modus, but to ultimately foil all attempts for these products to enter our markets and proliferate in our streets,” he said.
The physical examination of the remaining 75 boxes will continue on Monday, August 5, 2024.
Intelligence Group Deputy Commissioner Juvymax Uy lauded the BoC officers’ “innovative and relentless efforts” to curb the drug smuggling attempts.
