The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) on Monday cited the need to pass a new law to address the growing cases involving digital platforms.
DICT Secretary Ivan Uy said the current approach, which includes separate laws targeting specific issues such as scams, misinformation, and deepfakes — is insufficient.
“I think so, we need a new law. Actually, I think we need to have a more comprehensive law rather than bits and pieces of legislation that addresses small items or specific items,” Uy said in an interview in Malacañang.
He pointed to models from other countries, such as Singapore’s online harm law, which provides a unified legal approach to address various online threats.
“We actually have a lot of laws, and it’s very difficult to keep track and to enforce all of them. So, I think, a more comprehensive approach would be appropriate,” Uy said.
He explained a new law that could impose penalties on social media platforms would help regulate the “enablers” of such cases.
