DP World and Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) are playing a key role in transforming the Philippines into a major economic hub in Southeast Asia through ongoing infrastructure investments and trade efficiency improvements.
In an interview with The Manila Times, Glen Hilton, CEO and managing director of DP World Asia Pacific and chairman of ATI, said the two companies have invested $90 million to modernize Batangas Port and enhance operations at Manila South Harbor.
The development of the Tanza Barge Terminal provides an alternative to congested road routes, streamlining cargo movement. The introduction of DP World’s Cargoes system at Batangas Port has also increased productivity, demonstrating the benefits of technological advancements in port operations.
“Our nearly two-decade partnership with ATI has been crucial to our growth in the Philippines. By combining DP World’s global logistics expertise with ATI’s local connections, we’re connecting Filipino businesses to domestic and international markets,” said Hilton.
The partnership also focuses on improving domestic connectivity within the Philippines. Initiatives such as regular container shuttle services between Tanza and Manila, and the expansion of the Batangas passenger terminal’s capacity to handle 8 million passengers annually aim to strengthen inter-island trade.
Boosting regional and global trade
The Philippines’ strategic location and growing economy make it a vital regional and global trade player. DP World’s investments are enhancing trade efficiency across Southeast Asia. The country’s involvement in free trade agreements, such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, positions it as a gateway for international trade.
Hilton added, “Our strategy in the Philippines is focused on improving maritime transport efficiency, which is key to boosting trade and economic growth. We also support the Philippine government’s priorities in trade expansion, investment promotion, and competitiveness.”
Building a resilient supply chain
DP World and ATI are committed to building a resilient global supply chain. Their logistics solutions reduce dependency on single trade routes, ensuring smoother and more efficient operations. This partnership is set to meet customer needs, drive economic growth, and solidify the Philippines’ status as a major economic hub.
Beyond commercial success, DP World and ATI are contributing to the community through sustainability programs focused on children, water, and women. These efforts include scholarships for underserved communities, reforestation, Manila Bay rehabilitation and women empowerment programs in collaboration with government and nongovernment organizations.
