MANILA, Philippines – The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) expressed its sympathy over the passing of former ambassador Howard Q. Dee, a paragon of virtue whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to service, integrity and deep compassion for those most in need.
The Philippine ambassador to the Holy See and Malta from 1986 to 1990 died on Aug. 21, a day after he suffered a stroke. He was 94.
“Ambassador Dee was more than a distinguished philanthropist and accomplished businessman. He was an exemplar of moral leadership and social responsibility. His life was a testament to the highest principles of justice, peace, and human dignity,” the FFCCCII statement read.
“As a former peace negotiator, he dedicated himself to bridging divides and fostering reconciliation, always with the greater good of the nation as his guiding light,” it added.
It said Dee’s legacy was enshrined in the numerous institutions he founded and led. Among them, a founding trustee of the Philippine Business for Social Progress in 1970, founder of the Assisi Development Foundation in 1975, the Philippine Development Assistance Program in 1984 and ASA Philippines in 2002.
“Through these initiatives and his service as a leader in various NGOs (nongovernmental organizations) such as Tabang Mindanaw, Caritas Manila, and Pondo ng Pinoy, Ambassador Dee exemplified the essence of servant leadership. He led not by the power of position, but through an unwavering commitment to purpose and principle,” it said.
Dee was the son of the late FFCCCII vice president Dee Hong Lue, nephew of FFCCCII vice president Dee K. Chiong, nephew of pre-war leader and philanthropist Dee C. Chuan, and great grandnephew of philanthropist and 19th century Philippine lumber industry pioneer entrepreneur Dy Han Kia.
In 2018, Dee’s extraordinary contributions to society were recognized with the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
“As we reflect on Ambassador Dee’s remarkable life, we are reminded that his legacy transcends the many titles and positions he held. His true impact lies in the countless lives he touched, the communities he uplifted, and the enduring principles of love, compassion and justice that he championed,” the FFCCCII said.
“The FFCCCII honors the memory of Ambassador Howard Q. Dee. His life will continue to inspire us to uphold the highest ethical standards in business, to actively engage in social reform and philanthropy, and to foster a spirit of unity and peace across our nation. May we all draw strength from his example and strive to carry forward his vision for a better, more just Philippines,” it added.
