ACCORDING to a 2021 World Bank study, the Philippines generates a staggering 2.7 million tons of plastic waste per year, of which an estimated 20 percent ends up in the ocean. The accumulation of mismanaged plastic waste poses a threat to poor urban areas, as plastic pollution may block the drainage system and cause flooding events.
As a response, Fisher Mall introduces Eco Rewards: Transforming Trash into Opportunities to promote effective waste management at the source. The initiative aims to engage mall tenants and local communities in environmental conservation efforts while providing economic benefits to residents.
Raymond del Rosario, president of Fisher Mall Group of Companies, says that the recent Typhoon Carina has made the need to “intensify our commitment to environmental sustainability” more evident. Eco Rewards will also address the challenges to environmental health and contribute to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte-Alimurung’s goal of achieving zero carbon in the city by 2050.

Together with BEST and BXtra Philippines, Fisher Mall is opening a Trash to CashBack Trading Booth, which encourages participants to bring their properly sorted recyclable waste to earn Environmental Points and additional benefits upon redemption. The booth will be located at Fisher Mall Quezon Avenue Driveway near the footbridge, and operate every second and fourth Friday of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration for Trash to CashBack will also be available during the trading booth’s operating hours.
Alongside the booth’s opening, the Quezon City Climate Change and Environment Sustainability Department will lead an orientation on Plastic Ordinance and Circular Economy Initiatives at the Fisher Mall Event Center. This platform will teach community members about effective waste management practices and how they can participate in the Trash to CashBack program.
The Quezon City Small Business and Cooperatives Development and Promotions Office will showcase a variety of eco-friendly merchandise to demonstrate the practical applications of sustainable materials and products.
