THE government is creating a subsidy plan for employees that would be affected by the total ban on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs) beginning December 31.

The two agencies involved in the initiative were the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), and the Department of Labor and Employment.

“Initially, what will be done is to come up with a plan itself, and I have committed to [Labor] Secretary [Bienvenido] Laguesma that Pagcor will definitely find ways to help out the fund that will be set up for these displaced workers,” Pagcor Chairman Alejandro Tengco told the House of Representatives during deliberations on the agency's budget.

Tengco added that the Labor Department has already been doing job profiling of the 30,000 to 60,000 POGO workers to be affected by the ban.

Deputy Minority Leader Rep. Paul Ruiz Daza urged Pagcor to fast-track the plan.

“There is a golden opportunity, but the industry just gave it a bad name, and we learn from mistakes, and we come up with a better version,” Daza said.

The House of Representatives terminated the discussions on Pagcor's budget after the Appropriations Panel received satisfying answers over its projected 2024 income amounting to P100.8 billion.
