Sustainability is one of the things that consumers, especially those in the younger generations, have been growing more concerned about in recent years.
With many seeing the effects of practices that are detrimental to the environment coming to life through stronger typhoons and disastrous flooding to name a few, calls for more sustainable efforts from both individuals and corporations are being made.
One brand that has decided to heed this call is Danish variety store chain Flying Tiger Copenhagen. Hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, and opening its first store in the Philippines last October 2023, the brand offers a wide variety of products such as toys, party decorations, basic home essentials, fitness accessories, and many more. In its mission to uphold sustainability, its products utilize wood and metal as well as recycled plastic.
During the launch of its Planet-Friendly campaign, Flying Tiger Copenhagen Philippines marketing head Billi Esguerra-Perez shared how the brand began its circular and green transition in 2019 as it positioned itself to be an environmentally friendly brand.
“Our main ambition is to be a global leader when it comes to sustainable retail,” said Esguerra-Perez.
With its advocacy for social responsibility, Flying Tiger Copenhagen has implemented systems that aim to minimize the brand’s environmental footprint. These efforts include removing 47 percent of plastic from the packaging of its products and successfully reducing its overall emissions by 26 percent. As it removed about 37 percent of its single-use products from its offerings, it was able to significantly reduce its plastic consumption as well as have 19 percent less plastic in its products.
About 96 percent of the wood and paper products in its line of offerings had received an FSC certification, which served as a mark from the Forest Stewardship Council that indicated the materials behind products were from responsibly managed forests. The packaging for the brand’s products is also 96 percent recyclable.
With its noticeable move towards sustainability, the brand is taking things a step further through its commitment to reducing plastic products in its offerings by 50 percent in 2025, achieving 50 percent recycled plastics by 2025, and reducing single-use products by 50 percent. This would mean that it will have cut back nearly 34 million single-use products by 2026.
“We are going all-in on sustainability. We want to be the frontrunners in the green transition of the retail industry and do our part to pass on a better globe to future generations,” said Flying Tiger Copenhagen CEO Martin Jermiin.
The campaign launch was held at the Ito Kish Design Food last Aug. 2, which featured a showcase of Flying Tiger Copenhagen’s line of eco-friendly products as well as various activities such as decorating tote bags and spinning a lucky wheel for prizes.
Flying Tiger Copenhagen stores are located at Glorietta 4, Alabang Town Center, TriNoma, Robinsons Galleria, Eastwood City Mall, SM North Edsa, SM Seaside Cebu, SM Sta. Mesa, and Bonifacio High Street. For more information, visit @flyingtigerph and on Instagram and Facebook.
