The Philippines has historically been a nation where traditional gender roles are deeply rooted in society. However, with Carlos Yulo ruling the Paris Olympics’ men’s floor exercise final on Saturday, August 3, he continues to challenge these long-held beliefs and inspire a new generation.

Gymnastics, often associated with grace and flexibility, is a sport where men are traditionally underrepresented. Growing up in a country where basketball and boxing take the lead in Philippine sports, Yulo showed his great passion in pursuing to become a world-class gymnast.

Just like in his recent win, Yulo showcased that athleticism, power, and artistry know no gender. From his exceptional talent in his field to his dynamic routines, Yulo has redefined the image of a male gymnast—that a female-dominant sport can also be a sport among men.

Breaking gender stereotypes is also not new for weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz. With her historic win at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Hidilyn defied expectations by clinching the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal. Traditionally viewed as a male-dominated sport, weightlifting has been associated with brute strength and physical power.

Diaz shattered expectations and proved that strength, determination, and athletic prowess are not exclusive to any gender.

Fellow Olympians Nesthy Petecio and Margilyn Didal have been very vocal about being part of the LGBTQIA+ community and used their time in the spotlight as an opportunity to proudly embrace their identities.

This only proves that conventional gender norms surrounding sports are not a hindrance among athletes from pursuing their passions and giving their all for their country.
