ABS-CBN artist and Eddys 2024 Best Actress Julia Montes is rallying support for Filipino pork, even as the industry faces challenges due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).
“Pork is fun,” Montes declared on social media this week, aligning herself with other celebrities promoting the consumption of local pork products.
The ASF outbreak has led to declining pork consumption, with many consumers turning to chicken and fish instead. This shift has severely impacted hog raisers, many of whom have lost their livelihoods after losing their pigs to the disease.
Chester Warren Tan, president of the National Federation of Hog Farmers, reassured the public that pork sold in supermarkets is safe as it undergoes rigorous national meat inspections.
Montes, a vocal supporter of backyard hog raisers, also emphasized pork consumption safety. “I love to eat lechon (roast pig), so huwag po tayong matakot kumain ng Pinoy pork (let’s not be afraid to eat Filipino pork) because pork is fun,” she captioned, expressing confidence that consumers will soon overcome their hesitations and return pork to their dining tables.
