Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes and Laguna 3rd District Rep. Loreto Amante spearheaded the filing of House Bill 10739 which aims to clarify the rights and privileges and granting of added protections to Filipinos aged 60 and above.
The bill for the proposed Magna Carta of Senior Citizens was already filed in Congress for approval. Ordanes said the passing of the bill will mean better health services, additional social protection benefits and more support for senior citizens as they become an integral part of their communities.
The lawmaker added that based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) last 2022, senior citizens comprised 8.5% of the country’s population.
Ordanes also filed a separate proposal for the creation of programs and benefits for senior overseas Filipino workers who are going back to the country and will stay permanently. Under his House Bill No. 10705, Ordanes is seeking social protection for OFWs who are 60-year old and above which is based on the Philippine Development Plan 2023 – 2028.
