THE League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) was in full support of the total ban on Philippine Online Gaming Operations (POGOs) as ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“We will take immediate actions and measures to ensure that LCP members will strictly comply with the order of the President,” Quezon City mayor and LCP acting president Maria Josefina Belmonte, said on Thursday.
The league has 149 members.
Belmonte added that LCP’s support for a total POGO ban was declared before the Joint Committee on Public Order and Safety and Committee on Games and Amusements at the House of Representatives on July 31.
Belmonte took the post as acting LCP president after the league’s head, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama was suspended by the Ombudsman for graft charges.
“We will not turn a blind eye to illegal activities in POGO hubs. We will not allow the use of local business licenses to hurt residents in our jurisdictions,” said Belmonte, the league’s former vice president.
The mayor said there is one legally operating POGO hub in her city but it shall cease its operations before the end of the year.
“As our President has said, they (POGOs) have strayed from their professes business and devolved to unlawful activities such as financial scamming, money laundering, prostitution, human trafficking, kidnapping, brutal torture and even murder,” Belmonte said.
