President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. dismissed allegations of human rights violations during a police operation at fugitive televangelist Pastor Apollo Quiboloy’s compound in Davao City last weekend.
In an interview in Malacañang, the President emphasized the need for a significant police presence to ensure safety and security as the scale of the area necessitated the deployment of many officers.
“Are there human rights violations when there is a lot of police? I don’t think so. Anyway, the reason we did this was so that we could maintain the peace. The only way to maintain the peace is to make sure that the area is safe and is secure,” Mr. Marcos said, explaining why the Philippine National Police (PNP) deployed 2,000 cops during the raid.
“There were no human rights violations. None of the police were armed, and no tear gas was used. The operation was peaceful,” he added.
The President said resistance from supporters led to injuries among both police and followers of Quiboloy’s Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) group.
“I really don’t understand why Quiboloy is dragging his people into this. He’s putting them on the line, and they (police officers) haven’t done anything wrong,” Marcos said.
