MANILA, Philippines — Up to 10.4 kilos of marijuana with an estimated street value of P17.16 million were intercepted by security officers at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga on Monday.

The marijuana, placed in two wooden crates declared to be containing pieces of furniture, was detected by an x-ray scanner at around 11 a.m., according to Brig. Gen. Christopher Abrahano, chief of the Aviation Security Group.

Abrahano said they received information on Aug. 5 that several kilos of marijuana would be brought into the country from Bangkok, Thailand.

“These crates had already been tagged and when these were subjected to inspection, the officers became suspicious,” Abrahano said.

Twenty-three plastic bags containing marijuana were found in the crates.

Abrajano said the crates were consigned to a resident of Hermosa town in Bataan.

The consignee may face charges of violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

The illegal shipment was turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency for proper disposal.
