PCG starts recovery of oil slick from grounded vessel in Bataan

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) started its oil recovery operation on Thursday off Sitio Quiapo in the village of Biaan, Mariveles, Bataan where MV Mirola 1 ran aground on Wednesday.

PCG personnel were manually scooping out the oil inside the vessel which was taken to a waste disposal facility to avoid posing health risks to residents.

The PCG also conducted drone aerial surveillance and shoreline assessment in the area where MV Mirola 1 ran aground.

They observed minimal oil sheens and a light smell of diesel oil within the area.

The team also collected samples for water sampling analysis.

MV Mirola 1 is the third vessel to run into trouble in the waters of Bataan, after MT Terra Nova and MKTR Jason Bradley sank in the past week.
