PHILIPPINE Postal Corp. (PhilPost) Chairman and Postmaster General Mike Planas said on Saturday that he will not subject the Post Office and its employees to further conflict and disorder by commenting on the leadership issue raised by the heads of several units and divisions of PhilPost.
“My only priority now is that we live up to our mandate to continue to serve the public and not subject the Post Office and its employees to further discord and disruption,” said Planas in a short statement sent to The Manila Times.
Planas said that his primary concern now is the welfare of the employees of the Post Office.
“I can feel and understand their frustration, and I truly empathize with them. I would just like to protect them,” he said.
Senior officials and managers at PhilPost recently issued a manifesto in which they pointed out that for over a month now, the Post Office has been “daunted” by issues concerning leadership, particularly as to who the legitimate postmaster general and CEO is.
“The matter has already adversely affected day-to-day operations,” the PhilPost officers said in their manifesto.
They claimed that the issue has caused demoralization, division and distrust among employees.
“The conduct of the power struggle has created vulnerabilities, uncertainties, complexities and ambiguities in the corporate environment and structure, especially in performing our daily duties and postal operations to the detriment of public service,” the PhilPost officials said.
PhilPost is a government-owned and -controlled corporation in which the CEO is elected annually by the members of the board from among its ranks, consistent with Republic Act 10149.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. named Luis Carlos as acting postmaster general and member of the PhilPost Board of Directors on March 28, 2023. He assumed office as the new postmaster general and CEO on April 3, 2023.
In May, President Marcos appointed Planas as the new chairman of the PhilPost Board of Directors.
Subsequently, the PhilPost Board of Directors elected him as its new postmaster general and CEO at the annual election last June 18.
