The poverty incidence in the Bangsamoro region has significantly dropped in the past four years while transitioning from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, according to the 2023 Full Year Official Poverty Statistics by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The poverty incidence in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) declined to 23.5% in 2023 from 52.6% in 2018.
PSA defines poverty incidence as “the proportion of families/individuals with per capita income/expenditure less than the per capita poverty threshold to the total number of families/individuals.”
PSA said that the national poverty incidence among families in 2023 was recorded at 10.9%, which translates to 2.99 million Filipino families without enough income to meet their basic food and non-food necessities.
Despite the drop in figures since 2018, the BARMM is still one of the regions with the highest poverty incidence in 2023 alongside Zamboanga Peninsula at 24.2% and the Negros Island Region at 22.6%.
Meanwhile, the National Capital Region remained the least poor among the regions with a poverty incidence of 1.1% in 2023.
From 2021 to 2023, Caraga also showed a notable improvement with a poverty incidence among families of 14.9% in 2023 from 25.9% in 2021. But the decrease is “not statistically significant,” the PSA noted.
According to the preliminary results of the PSA’s Family Income and Expenditure Survey, there were 17.54 million poor Filipinos in 2023, translating to a poverty incidence of 15.5%.
This is lower than the 19.99 million poor Filipinos in 2021 when the poverty incidence was 18.1%, and the 17.67 million in 2018, when the poverty incidence rate was 16.7%.—Vince Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
