MANILA, Philippines — SM Investments Corp. (SMIC) continues to empower more local producers through its weekend market initiative.

The SM Weekend Market, which was developed as a collaborative effort between SM Foundation and SM Supermalls, has welcomed more than 100 local farmers since its inception.

The market offers micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMES), particularly local farmers, a platform to connect with diverse customers such as weekend shoppers, mall employees and tenants.

“The SM Weekend Market provides MSMEs the strategic venues or marketplaces to showcase their products and engage directly with consumers,” SM Supermalls president Steven Tan said.

SMIC said the initiative is not just about commerce, but is also a strategic move to integrate local producers into the retail ecosystem while bolstering economic resilience and community development.

The company said local producers’ exposure to the market has not only expanded their reach but also significantly boosted their profitability.

“Our goal is to transfer modern, science-based agri technology skillsets to our farmers. Once equipped with these advanced skills and knowledge, we link them to the available market,” SM Foundation assistant vice president Cristie Angeles said.

The SM Weekend Market is currently operating in 18 malls nationwide.

According to SMIC, the success of the SM Weekend Market is also made possible through collaborative partnerships with various governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The partnerships are instrumental in scaling the impact of such program and ensuring its long-term sustainability.

“By leveraging the expertise and resources of each partner, the SM group not only enhances program delivery but also fosters innovation and resilience within local economies,” SMIC said.
