Vice President Sara Duterte backed the proposed bill filed by her brother, Davao 1st District Representative Paolo Duterte, which requires government officials to undergo mandatory random drug testing.

In an ambush interview in Davao City on Thursday, the Vice President said the drug test will help ensure that government officials are in their right minds.

“Yes, of course, oo. Unang una dapat talaga mapanigurado nating lahat ‘no na nasa tamang pag-iisip ‘yung ating mga public officials, kasama na ako doon,” she said.

(Yes, of course. First of all, we should ensure that public officials, including me, are in their right minds.)

House Bill No. 10744 mandates elected and appointed government officials, including the President, to undergo random drug tests through hair follicle drug tests every six months.

It also seeks to institutionalize voluntary random drug testing of candidates for electoral posts within 90 days prior to Election Day.

Elected and appointed officials who test positive may be suspended or terminated from office, according to the bill.

Vice President Duterte also said that she is willing to undergo a hair follicle drug test herself, as challenged by former Presidential spokesman Harry Roque.

“Yes, yes. Opo. Nababasa ko na ‘yung panawagan ng mga tao. At aayusin na lang natin kung kailan ‘yun. Kasi dapat siguro doon na merong unang una, third party na kasali doon sa testing at siguro hindi lang isa ang laboratory para sure tayo na naba-validate ‘yung results,” she said.

(Yes. I’ve read the calls of the people. We just need to schedule when that will be. We should have a third party joining us in the drug testing and another laboratory to validate the results.)

“So ‘yung ganyang detalye, gusto ko ma-plantsa ng lahat ng nananawagan. Gawin natin ‘yung drug test,” she added.
