In Abra, a 72-year-old man found dead at the Baay River after falling reportedly into the water while intoxicated, afternoon on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

The victim was identified as Raymund Sales.

According to police, a local resident discovered the body caught in a fish fence in the middle of the river.

His family believes he may have accidentally fallen into the nearby river and drowned.

They did not request for an autopsy.

Another incident

In a separate incident in Barangay Bantayan, Mangaldan, Pangasinan, an 85-year-old woman named Paz De Guzman was found dead in a river near her home.

Her family noticed her absence around 1 a.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2024, and began searching immediately.

After hours of searching, her body was found in the river.

According to her relatives, De Guzman often liked to walk, but they never expected she would end up in the river.

De Guzman’s family believe that she fell into the driver and drowned.

Joel De Guzman, the victim’s relative, shared his last memory with her.

“Sabi lang sakin, dahil nakahiga na siya, sabi lang niya, ‘Salamat.’ Yun ang huling sabi niya. Hindi ko naman inaasahan na ganun ang mangyayari,” he said.

Some residents reportedly heard a shout coming from the river but did not realize someone was drowning.

“May nakakakita daw na may sumusigaw doon sa ilog na kumakaway-kaway. Hindi sila lumabas, akala nila kung ano. Tiningnan ng kaniyang anak, siya pala nakasabit ang kaniyang damit,” Eva Lazo, Barangay Health Worker (BHW) President of Barangay Bantayan, said.

The local government has since reminded residents living near the river to be careful and take steps to avoid similar accidents. — with reports from Claire Lacanilao, GMA Regional TV One North Central Luzon/ GMA Regional TV
