ABS-CBN bags license deal for Sony movies

MANILA, Philippines — ABS-CBN Corp. has landed a licensing agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment for the screening of Sony movies on ABS-CBN platforms.

ABS-CBN announced it has expanded its content portfolio on its digital channels with the addition of Sony films to its library of movies.

The license signed with Sony covers a multitude of movies, from comedy and horror, to romance and action, allowing ABS-CBN to air them on the YouTube outlets of ABS-CBN Entertainment, Cinema and iWantTFC.

Based on the initial list, ABS-CBN landed the rights to show cult classics “Mrs. Winterbourne” and “Sleepwalkers,” including comedies like About “Last Night” and Cops and “Robbersons.” The network also acquired permission to screen horror movies like “13 Ghosts“ and “The Evil Dead.”

On top of this, ABS-CBN will air star-studded films, such as Cadillac Records featuring Adrien Brody, Beyonce Knowles and Jeffrey Wright. The licensing also covers “Excess Baggage” starring Alicia Silverstone and Jane Austen’s “Book Club” featuring Emily Blunt.

ABS-CBN head of digital Jaime Lopez believes the tie-up would benefit viewers who are always on the lookout for award-winning and classic movies.

“Sony Pictures Entertainment is known for their years of expertise in producing hit and timeless movies that connect with viewers all over the world,” Lopez said.

“This deal also marks an exciting opportunity for us to provide new content and stories that our viewers will love,” he added.

Sony Pictures Television vice president for Asia distribution Eugene Lin recognized ABS-CBN’s reach when it comes to streaming content in the Philippines. He said the partnership would allow Sony to introduce its library to a wider audience in the country.

For ABS-CBN, the licensing deal with Sony fortifies its push to press hard on digital. It decided to go online to keep the business floating following its exit on free TV in 2020, when its bid for a fresh franchise was denied.

Since then, ABS-CBN has placed its movies and shows on digital channels, some for free, some on demand, to complete its pivot to the online space.

ABS-CBN has generated P4.91 billion in revenues from content production and distribution as of June, driven by growing digital reach and supported by international collaborations.
